I loved the Casey's acoustic guitar book one. He covered various bass runs integrated with the strumming patterns presented. He also gave some very good instrumental versions of popular fiddle tunes and traditional songs in tablature for soloing. In book 2 it seems to me that the entire book is devoted to strum patterns on various rock songs from the 70s and 80s. I think that this kind of instruction would be great for a chapter or two in a book 2; but to devote an entire book to this was extremely disappointing to me. Book one he described how to go about creating good backup rhythms for a song and accompaniment to your vocals.
Book two is just a series of strum patterns without the good instructional framework that I saw in book one. I compare it to a hastily produced poor sequel to a good movie. Bought it as a gift. It was well liked. Great tutorial for great price. Love playing my guitar! After going through Bert Casey's beginning, I purchase this one.
Beginner Guitar Quick-Start Series
It is a great step by step book. It is easy to follow the book. So I learn the guitar without a private teacher? One person found this helpful. This follow-on tutorial to the Acoustic Primer Book is more interesting and varied. The Primer is excellent but emphasizes country bass runs with a variety of traditional or folk songs.
This book starts with Rock strumming patterns which I found more enjoyable.
The second section continues the country music picking techniques from the Primer but with more familiar music like Man of Constant Sorrow and Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain. Having digested Book 1, I actually found myself starting to enjoy the country style more than I would have thought. The third section teaches arpeggios, which was quite fun. The next sections deal with Capo techniques, barre chords, muted strumming, and accompanying other guitarists. Overall, Book 2 was more of a hodgepodge of different styles and techniques but it was all quite enjoyable.
If one takes both books seriously, practicing enough to play along with Casey at full tempo, then it seems believable one would be an "intermediate" guitarist by the end of the second book.
